Where’s the ABS Control Unit?

Let's not just presume

In this video, we’re taking a closer look at ABS control systems — and specifically the misconception that the control module is always part of the valve body or motor assembly.
While older vehicles commonly had external ABS control units mounted separately from the hydraulic block, modern vehicles can vary quite a bit. Not all late-model cars house the control electronics inside the valve/motor assembly either — so don’t assume based on age alone.
If you’re looking at the wiring and only seeing power, wheel speed sensor inputs, and CAN bus signals, but no clear sign of logic control — it’s a strong clue that the actual ABS ECU is located elsewhere.
A good diagnostic tip is to trace where the wheel speed sensor wiring terminates. In many external control setups, the sensor wiring will go directly to the ABS ECU — often a separate unit clearly marked as "ABS" or "Anti-lock Brake System Control."
Bottom line:
Don’t rely on assumptions. Trace the wiring, understand the layout, and be sure you’re testing the right module.
